Valued Exposure: On 7 September, 1921 Atlantic city hosted a beauty pageant called the Inter-City Beauty Contest where the winner wasn't called Miss America, and she won a trophy called the Golden Mermaid, not a college scholarship. Second from left is Margaret Gorman, Miss Washington, DC, who re-entered the next year, but because there was another Miss Washington, DC in the running, she was dubbed Miss America. The name stuck.
